Explore Modern Traditionalism

Colleen Carlson has been an avid quilter for over 26 years. She’s a Registered Pharmacist and a NACQJ Certified Quilt Judge who thoroughly enjoys all the creativity she has the privilege of judging. Colleen taught “Pencil Play: Explore Modern Traditionalism” as a design class at QuiltCon 2024 in Raleigh, NC. The Tulsa Modern Quilt Guild asked her to convert her three-hour design class into a one-hour Zoom lecture for their guild. Explore Modern Traditionalism was born and first presented in March 2024. Colleen has had quilts juried into Quilt Con, Paducah, and IQF in Houston. She has also been a multiple ribbon winner at Road to California.  Colleen lives in Grand Forks, North Dakota, with her husband, and they have two grown children.

Explore Modern Traditionalism is a journey about updating traditional blocks and quilts with modern design elements. Colleen recently took four art classes at her local university that opened her to assessing design elements and principles and applying them to quilt design. No mysterious transformations occur: the concepts can be named and used to design your choice.
