We have an exciting, varied lineup of workshops for this year. They are geared for quilters of all levels. A beginner will not be lost, and an advanced quilter will learn or refresh a new technique and pick up (or contribute) tips. Everyone will talk, laugh and sew in an atmosphere of fellowship.  We have 8 Wednesday workshops the day after the night meetings, and 3 Saturday sessions this year. I ask every member to support our programs and workshops and make suggestions for future speakers and topics.

All of the workshops are at cost, which is generally $35.00 for members and some have a pattern or supply fee in addition to the workshop fee. I look forward to seeing you there!

Grace Errea Workshop

Nov 16, 2016    9am     Mendenhall Center    1414 Wirt Rd

Thread Drawing and Quilting the Art Quilt

In this 1-Day class you will learn and practice or enhance your free motion quilting skills.  First we will warm up by free-motion quilting a number of patterns that can be used for continuous background quilting in art quilts.  You will also learn how to sign your name on your quilt by using the sewing machine as a writing tool.

Then we will make one or more simple drawing on muslin sandwiches from patterns included in Grace's kit. We will proceed to draw the designs with your sewing machine using thread.  Kit for the class: $10.00 contains patterns for the drawing exercise and various stabilizers for you to try.  We will end with a drawing of a portrait that you will reproduce by thread drawing it on cloth.

This technique requires minimum effort and practice.  You can execute it even if you do not feel comfortable with free motion quilting. We will review and practice free motion and discuss threads used in the process. Along with creating this quilt, this class will definitely improve your free-motion quilting skills, regardless of the level you are at now.  At the end of the class, you will feel very confident of your quilting skills and be ready to attack any quilting challenges you might have in the future.

Gateway to Mongolia

This pattern features the traditional Mongolian Ölzii motif with decorative border often painted on the doors of gers (Mongolian yurts). It is thought to bring long life and prosperity and to drive away wild beasts and evil spirits. In Tibetan Buddhism, which is practiced in Mongolia, this never-ending knot symbolizes the universe and the unending cycles of life and death.  20% of net proceeds from pattern sales donated to the Mongolian Quilting Center in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

This 50 x 40 top reminds us of Celtic Knots; however, it is achieved through subtle color gradation in pieced blocks. All levels of quilter will learn something about color blending and practice precise piecing.
